arpeggio of blue steel - vibration warhead

Blue Steel finally gets a peek at the cargo they will be transporting – the (made in Japan) Vibration Warhead…

It is then that Gunzou once again spots the girl they met in episode 3. He asks Iona about it but she doesn’t answer. As it turns out, Iona is communicating with Maya, expressing her confusion about the different emotions shown by Haruna and Kirishima during the previous battle.

Meanwhile, Haruna and Kirishima (in the form of her core) has been rescued by the mysterious girl — who goes by the name of Makie Osakabe. Concerned by Haruna’s state of undress under her coat, Makie decides to play dress up with Haruna — with costumes like:

Haruna’s chosen look — The frilly European dress?

It is not just clothes though, as Makie attempts to style Haruna’s hair as well…

Pretty sure you can’t get this kind of hair style with just a comb…

When Haruna finally gets a break after Makie leaves the room, Kirishima requests for Haruna to share some nanomaterial with her. And Kirishima’s new form?

The Kirishima bear… for only $39.95!

At dinner, Kirishima promptly proceeds to blow her cover by eating the carrots which Makie tries to feed to her. Haruna manages to brush off the incident by posing as a “robot scientist”.

The Kirishima bear… going where no stuffed animal has gone before…

After more “skinship time” in the bath, Makie goes to sleep. Haruna and Kirishima give a status update to Kongou, who approves Kirishima’s proposal to find out more about the human’s vibration torpedo. As Haruna and Kirishima sneak out of Makie’s room to do some reconnaissance, they are intercepted by one of the mansion’s maids and are brought to meet Makie’s supposedly dead “father”, Toujuurou Osakabe.

Haruna and Kirishima meet the real master of the house — Toujuurou Osakabe…

It is soon revealed that Makie is a “Design Child” — an artificially created human with an intelligence that far exceeds human capabilities — and is the creator of the vibration torpedoes. Out of fear, the government moved both Toujuurou and Makie to the mansion so that they can be kept under surveillance. When the government requests a backup of Makie be created, Toujuurou fakes his death to protect Makie. Toujuurou asks both Haruna and Kirishima to “be friends” with Makie and protect her. The military, now seemingly aware of Haruna and Kirishima’s presence, surrounds the mansion…

Out at sea, Takao reaches Iwo Jima ahead of the I-401. However, she soon comes under attack by the island’s defences, which she realises are not under human control…

Takao arrives at Iwo Jima…

A nice change of pace and a thoroughly enjoyable episode (and highly ‘screenshot-able’ one as well) despite the lack of actual battles. It was pretty interesting to see the interaction between Haruna, Makie and Kirishima; as well as Haruna’s growing affection for Makie (which would affect events to come in future episodes).

For now, it does seem that the introduction of mental models into the Fog fleet is to their own detriment — with Takao and Iona’s defection and Haruna’s feelings for Makie. With the origin of mental models yet to be revealed in both the anime and manga, it would be pretty fascinating to see how it plays out in relation to the whole plot and how it might affect Fog-Human relations in future.
